Each marker sits at the polity’s heartland — a capital or core region — not on its shifting historical frontier. The map shows roughly where power sat, not the exact extent it claimed.

One era, many centuries

A marker’s colour is the era most relevant to this site’s coverage, but many of these states endured across several eras. The date beside each name gives the fuller span.

A simplified coastline

The outline is a deliberately simplified drawing of the continent for orientation. It is not a survey map and should not be used to judge distances or boundaries.
